About the Author
NICHOLAS IRVING spent six years in the Army's Special Operations 3rd Ranger Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment, serving from demolitions assaulter to Master Sniper. He was the first African American to serve as a sniper in his battalion and is now the owner of HardShoot, where he trains personnel in the art of long-range shooting, from Olympians to members of the Spec Ops community. He also appears as a mentor on the Fox reality show American Grit. He lives in San Antonio, Texas. Sergeant "Nick" Irving brings a very personal and detailed story of his time service many tours as a Army Ranger Special Ops Ranger. Nick shares his feelings and exciting details as his job just as Kyle did but for Nick obviously it is presented in the "First Person"I found it interesting that Nick was not bring his counts of KIA's to this book. He more so brings the adventures of a dedicated Army Veteran intent in bringing the life of a Sniper to all of us interested in the sacrifices our current Veterans are making.He also brings out the major difference in the cultures of the Afghanistan people and America. The difference especially between the males & females of both of our cultures are detailed in a shocking and sinister way. If only the average American could personally witness the horrors of war I firmly believe we would see our Veterans and their families taken much better care of and not ignored by the VA and our current National Veterans Groups.Gary J. Not really an autobiography as much as a highly readable account of a single deployment in Afghanistan, but the author comes off as an intelligent, honest, and highly skilled soldier. I've often wondered how the members of our professional military can endure multiple combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan without becoming disillusioned by the futility of attempting to help liberate people who neither want nor appreciate that help, and, in fact, see them as both infidels and invaders. Irving describes that burgeoning disillusionment beautifully, with no rancor or bitterness, and Brozek does a fine job of capturing his feelings and giving his story flow and interest. The truth I took from this is that even the best soldiers, and Rangers are definitely some of the finest, most disciplined and skilled soldiers in the world, cannot liberate a people unready and unwilling to liberate themselves. We may have accomplished some nebulous geopolitical goals in those wars, but liberating Iraq or Afghanistan were probably not among them. It makes me wonder whether our efforts were ever worth the life of even one Corporal Kopp, much less all the lives we sacrificed. While it makes me proud to read about men like Nicholas Irving and the men of his Ranger platoon, I can't help thinking that we owe them clearer goals and worthier causes if we're going to ask them to risk their lives for us. Such men are the backbone of this country, and their lives should never be squandered in uncertain wars and actions. There will come a day, after all, when our nation will truly need such men for its own survival, as it has in the past, and it would be a shame to discover at that point that we have used them up senselessly in wars fought for dubious reasons. That said, one can take nothing away from those men who stood and fought at their country's request. They did the jobs required of them selflessly and often heroically. If there is fault in their story it is solely ours who sat home safely while they went back and back and back again to war in far off hell holes. We should be careful what we ask of our best and bravest.
It makes for exciting reading if you're into the genre. The author served as an Army sniper in the Middle East and certainly saw combat action, lots of it. Underlying all the action the reader cannot help but notice the brotherhood of the soldiers. You have to live the situation to understand one fact. At the base level, the atomic level, combat is all about your brother next to you. Fear of dying is offset by the fear of letting down your brothers. This aspect comes through loud and clear. Death before dishonor.The author does an autobiographical bit, too, and adding to the flavor of the book making the reading much more enjoyable.
I purchased the book because I heard about Nicholas Irving from the Demolition Ranch YouTube channel. I thought and I still do think that he is an American hero and I like to support our heroes anyway I can; including purchasing items that support them financially. The book is an okay read, but I personally find it factually challenged. Although I served 44 years prior, I was initially the crew chief of a CH-47 Chinook helicopter and later a Ranger (SQI 18B). As an example, in his book, Nicholas comments on the diesel fuel smell from the Chinook helicopters he has flown in - although helicopters run aviation fuel and not diesel. The two fuels do not smell anything alike. It's funny in a way and all of us do it. If a particular story gets the facts wrong in a profession or skill that we have command of, then the entire story is discounted.Nicholas also describes a firefight between Taliban combatants while they, the Taliban, were engaged in a Man on Man orgy of sorts. Seems a bit far-fetched that Islamic terrorists, in the midst of a jihad in Afghanistan, would be having gay sex - side by side, only to be caught by a US Army strike force with their pants down.
The book has the right amount of time at each scene, a with great descriptions of the action. If you like Special Ops stuff, this book adds another, different perspective to most other stuff already out there.I would have given it 5 stars, but the book starts a bit slow, has too much autobiography stuff in the beginning, and "special forces" was used where it should have been "Special Operations."Hey, Irv...nice tribute to Kopp. RLTW!
