I thought the previous novel in this revived series opened well, but quickly lost focus. “Cave of Bones†reverses the pattern. The opening third of the book sometimes reads like a first draft—with a slow-moving plot, inept descriptions, and some embarrassing sentences. Pace and style do improve noticeably, and the book has its moments, particularly when lead character Bernie Manuelito undertakes a rescue in a blinding snowstorm.But plot matters. It’s hard to build a cliffhanger around the funding of an outdoor program for girls, even when the backdrop is the Malpais. The main storyline in “Cave of Bones†heads off in too many directions and its subplot is even worse—poor Jim Chee dealing with the soap-opera histrionics of his sister-in-law. Lots of talk and not much action. Characters are numerous, but not drawn sharply enough to make “Cave of Bones†either convincing or memorable.I checked to be certain the cover of the book still says “A Leaphorn, Chee & Manuelito Novel.†It does. But the Legendary Lieutenant plays a small role here and, when a crucial discovery is made at the climax of the novel, Chee is left holding the flashlight. This is Bernie’s series now and it’s time to up her game.
Her first three books were good, with each one being slightly better than the next. As a result, I had high expectations and anxiously awaited this, her fourth book. Unfortunately, the wait was all for naught. This book was embarrassingly boring and tedious. A complete waste of time and money. Leaphorn and Chee are so downplayed that, for all practical purposes, they are "missing in action." They've been all but replaced by Manuelito's mother and sister. What a bore! Enough of the brainless sister and smothering mother, PLEASE! If Ms. Hillerman ever writes another Leaphorn, et al novel, then I definitely won't waste my money on another hardcover. I might give it a try when it comes to our local library, just to see if she's realized how bad this book is and has tried to get back on track. The question I have for Ms. Hillerman is, "What on earth happened between books three and four to cause such a downturn?"
This is the most critical review I have given a book that I enjoyed. Well, actually, about these two books. Yes, two books in one! The unrelated stories were somewhat tied together in the last pages of this volume.I have given this book only two stars. If it would have been Bernadette's mystery alone, I would have given it three stars (only three explained below). But, I had to take away one star for the Chee portion of the book.First to the Jim Chee storyline. Very little mystery. Lot's of interpersonal relationships where I felt that Jim Chee was more bad cop than good cop. This added nothing to the book and could have been a stand alone volume ~ but not of interest to me.. I would rate this portion at most only 1 star.Now, to the storyline relating to the book's title. I enjoyed the story ~ but must add the caveat that I lived adjacent to El Malpais in the late 1960's. I am not sure I would have enjoyed the descriptions of this incredible lava flow had I not spent a lot of time in it. Anne Hillerman's descriptions usually put the reader right into the scene. I did enjoy the narrative involving the metaphysics of El Malpais. I like the fact that Bernadette is traditional Diné in her beliefs. This adds greatly to the story. I was disappointed that Hillerman neglected a significant factor of the lava flow ~ ice caves. She mentioned El Morro (Inscription Rock) but failed to reference the Ice Caves located on the Continental Divide.I would have rated this portion of the book at 3 stars. Three stars only because of the unnecessary verbosity in some parts. Especially, driving in the snow storm. If these long descriptions had been shortened, it would have kept me from skipping over whole pages. I believe that had Hillerman asked a really good mystery editor this would have been prevented.Anne Hillerman has the capability of telling stories in the manner of her father. I look forward to her next book with the hope that the writing is more along the lines of Tony.
I still like the stories about the Navajo Police and Chee, Bernie and Leaphorn, but I’m not at all enthusiastic about the family ‘soap opera’ that takes up so much time and space! I also do like the cultural features of the stories and of the Four Corners area. I’ll be a five-star fan again if we drop the ‘soap opera’ chapters.
I read all Tony Hillerman's books, although I am not usually a fan of crime mysteries. Tony had such a knowledge, I'd call it more a deep intuitive knowing, about the Navajo way of life and value system (I was born on the reservation and have spent much time there in my lifetime). He also was a skilled writer and character developer.Because of my love for Tony's writing, I have kept reading his daughter's books. After this last one, I vow to no longer waste my time. She is not the writer he was, nor does she understand the Navajo ways: she sprinkles a few tidbits of Navajo beliefs but they lack the kind of intuitive knowing that Tony had. Her books are annoyingly disjointed and soulless. Especially this one, which dealt with such spiritual topics but without the spiritual insight.
A great disappointment. This book would have profited from an editor with a more ruthless red pencil. While the travelogues along the various roads and small communities could have been interesting, they meant little to a reader who didn't live in the area. The multiple plots wove together weakly at the end. Anna Hillerman is strong on dialogue between her Native American characters, but it is diluted by too much text in between, telling _about_ an event rather than living within it.The strength of Bernie and Jim lies in their relationship with each other and it would be nice to see them work together or spend more time using their complementary strengths to solve cases.Despite giving this book only three stars, I look forward to her next book.
