Review
Praise for Schooltalk:"This is a masterfully crafted text, sure to be a classic in education and anthropology...[It] should be required reading of students in every teacher education program in the United States of America."—H. Richard Milner IV, author of Rac(e)ing to Class"Reading Schooltalk is like sitting down for coffee and frank conversation with a trusted friend about what matters most in education: creating equitable opportunities for all young people. Pollock provides a goldmine of examples of actions, strategies, and resources for classrooms, schools, and communities. This is a beautiful book, one that will make a difference in how people consider what until now they may have thought of as simply innocent 'talk.'"—Sonia Nieto, Professor Emerita, University of Massachusetts, AmherstPraise for Mica Pollock's Everyday Antiracism:Teachers and parents often want to act on the issue of racism, but don’t know how. This one-of-a-kind volume is the blueprint; no one should teach another day without reading it.”Tim Wise, author of White Like MeEveryday Antiracism shows how ordinary people can be mindful and purposeful in confronting discrimination and taking concrete steps that, little by little, change the world.”Linda Darling-Hammond, Stanford UniversityIt’s rare to find a book as theoretically rich and practically useful as this one. Everyday Antiracism helps us see how everything that happens in school has racial implicationsand how in big and little ways we can all be agents of equality. What an important and hopeful resource this is.”Bill Bigelow, editor of Rethinking SchoolsPraise for Mica Pollock's Because of Race:[This book] challenges assertions that discrimination against minority children isn’t provable, shouldn’t be discussed, or can’t be fixed."Education WeekPraise for Mica Pollock's Colormute:"The scholarship is provocative, the text well written, and the argument clear and compelling. Pollock is a truly gifted writer."Michelle Fine, City University of New York

In her powerful book SchoolTalk, Dr. Mica Pollock challenges educators to take the simple yet bold step towards equity through mindful conversation…with students and about all students. Dr. Pollock reveals it’s not just what you say, or where you share your thoughts, but how and with whom you are discussing this student, from that neighborhood, with those grades…we are all familiar these types of conversations. As educators strive to create inclusive schools, this book stands out with clear instruction for reflection and action. I have recommended this book to hundreds of educators as a must read resource for teachers, bus drivers, counselors, advisors, parents, trainers…anyone who touches students' lives and are purposeful about contributing to their success. Thank you Dr. Pollock.
This is a wonderful book that reminds us that words, how we use them, how we say them, and where we use them matter in developing our school culture and generates perceptions of students. If you are looking to get into equity work in schools, this book is one that can help provide a framework for guiding you through the importance of language at schools.
The chapter on culture was helpful. The rest was common sense.
I am loving this book. Mica Pollock has this amazing capacity to see and explain (and honor) the nuance in how people talk. She did the same thing in Colormute—she takes a seemingly straightforward topic and makes clear all of the detail, nuance and internal contradictions that we need to pay attention to if we’re going to change how we do things in schools. Her writing is rich and her examples are vivid and relatable.I can already see how my practice as a teacher-educator will be different because of this text that so seamlessly travels from the societal to the institutional to the group level to the personal level and back out. It’s replete with tools! I love the equity arrow which asks you to consider whether the talk you are engaging in supporting student talent development—or not. I love the “strategies†and “try tomorrows†which give teachers concrete things to do in their classrooms the very next day. I love the mythstomper activity in which educators are asked to locate the myth, debunk it, and replace it. Schooltalk is an invaluable resource to teachers as they think about the day to day reality of their classrooms. It would be a perfect read for an inquiry group or book club among teachers.
Engaging approach to addressing matters of equity in school. Writing is accessible and smooth. Especially useful for those who are just getting started in conversations about equity concerns.
This book is a must-read for all educators whose goal is to make education more equitable or for anyone who is interested in striking up dialogue on education. How are different issues in education discussed in schools? How may those issues and discourse affect our students? Pollock provides the tools, exercises, and background literature in an accessible language for all readers/educators to understand and discuss. Highly recommended!
SchoolTalk masterfully shines a light on ways we communicate with and about kids. It is important for people who work with children to have resources like this -especially ones that take a theoretical framework and turn that into actionable steps. This particular book even has "Think/Discuss" prompts and "Action Assignments," making it an excellent professional development tool for school staff.-School Leader
This book should be mandatory for all pre-service teachers, teachers, and anyone working with students in the education field.
