I bought this to solve a problem. I read through about 70 percent of the book, at which point I felt ready to tackle the problem, and I did so successfully. Sure, you can Google how to do some of this stuff, but the book lays it out in an incremental fashion, in depth and in detail. Each example is broken down line by line in a chart. There's plenty of explanation, and it will cover topics and features you may not know existed if you're just hacking something together from Google. The book will turn you from a "I know some SQL" guy to a "I'm a DB professional."If you're a developer, you may find that certain tasks are easier to code in the database. Batch oriented tasks, scheduled tasks, or processes triggered by a change in a value in the database are good candidates for a stored procedure solution.The only downside from my experience is that I ordered the Kindle edition, and the screenshots are too small for the Kindle 2 to read comfortably. This book requires a DX-size Kindle.
I've Been working with MySQL for 14 years but never used Stored Procedures until I changed jobs. When I needed to produced reports from millions of rows I knew the simple queries weren't going to cut it. This book will get you up and running with stored procedures, triggers and functions in no time.
Being fairly new to MySQL (but not to programming) I needed to develop an application using PHP/OOP with MySQL and stored procedures. This book is pretty concise and got me going quickly. At the time, I searched the Amazon book offerings and also books on the shelf at Barnes & Noble. This book is the only one providing clear and concise material on the subject.I do wish the coverage would have been more detailed using PHP data objects (PDO) in combination with stored procedures that use various combinations of INPUT, OUTPUT and INPUT-OUTPUT parameters in addition to exception processing, etc. That would have been great but then, this isn't a PHP book. Too bad most PHP books seem to focus more on the basics of the language and don't delve into the weighty matters of real-world commercial application development.
I didn't know much beyond simple select queries and needed to grind through some data. Perl would have been a better fit, but I felt a relational database made sense at the time of request for the data. If you need to make single table row relationships, stored procedures are kind of the only option.
Very useful for using with asp web pages with pl. If you are familiar with Oracle Pl/SQL, this book is helpful of explaining the differences between the two versions.
Great book. The authors are very knowledgeable. Good as a read through or handy reference.
It walks you through writing, maintaining, and debugging stored procedures. It can be used as a reference and tutorial.I found Part IV Optimizing Stored Programs particularly useful.
Great book, excellent explanation, covering the very advanced usage and power of Stored Procedures capability in order to bring greater efficiency of application.Very clear style of writing, good examples with a detail explanation.Definitely recommended book.
