Very disappointed. The only change from this edition from the previous one is the inclusion of a "free book". It's just two model literature reviews printed. We don't need this kind of gimmick. We can find thousands of literature reviews online! I felt I insulted. I had looked forward to see more updates but was let down. It does not justify the $60 price tag at all. The quality of the printing and organization of the book is so old fashioned and outmoded. The book should be charge at $20. Please consider carefully before buying it. The knowledge is good but the changes in the different editions is very minimal. I remember reading the first edition. It had similar knowledge. I liked it very much but the author and publisher don't seem very genuine in improving the book. I feel that they just want to make money out of it. But not seriously interested in the pursuit of finding the best methods to do the literature review.
It never ceases to amaze me how hard it is to find a good simple resource to help a person get better at various kinds of academic writing given how much of it you end up doing in such a wide variety of degrees. With a full load of classes each with their own mountains of textbooks it is not very helpful when a teacher refers me to a foot-thick book on APA style and expects that to help me get my paper written by next week. I love how this book breaks the process down into manageable steps and provides examples to look at. A picture is worth a thousand words as they say.
Honestly one of the most informationally enriching textbooks in my undergraduate studies. It provides a LOT of examples, so you know exactly what to do - exactly how to write literature reviews! Awesome purchase, and I regret re-selling it after purchase. It was a great reference book.
Good basics, easy to review quickly or read in depth, and reminds the reader of basics that they may have forgotten then builds on that information.
My master's professor forced us to order this book, and then she disputed the reviews credibility because she preferred her own personal style instead...Great book!
This book was instrumental in helping me to write my literature review for my senior capstone course over the past 16 weeks. The checklist at the end of the book was truly helpful. This is a book to keep for future writing of literature reviews.
Galvan's book is well-structured and easy to read. The organization of the book--using guidelines--makes it easy to follow. However, I would be cautious to restrict myself only to the guidelines recommended as they are not comprehensive. For example, the chapter on how to review qualitative research lacks other guidelines for establishing the credibility of a piece of research. Another point to note is that there are different styles of literature based on one's epistemological beliefs and the purpose of the review, hence the guidelines recommended as well as samples included may obscure other ways of organizing literature review. Overall, a useful book to start one off a literature review, but I would supplement this book with others to obtain a more balanced point-of-view.
