Review
"Mega-hit ALMOST, MAINE lands somewhere between Norman Rockwell and 'Our Town.' Unabashedly unhip. There is no pretense of an edge here -- the show offers a sweetness and decency that's become rare at the theater. At this point, it's a welcome breath of fresh air."Â The New York Post (2014)"ALMOST, MAINE is a series of nine amiably absurdist vignettes about love, with a touch of good-natured magic realism...witty, romantic, unsentimental. A beautifully structured play, with nifty surprise endings (most but not all of them happy)."Â The New York Times (2013)"A higher-concept and more clever version of Hollywood hits like 'Love Actually' and 'Valentine's Day,' this rom-com leans on shrewd writing rather than star power in its nine interlocking love stories. [It] alternates beautiful, evocative prose with stutteringly awkward exchanges and often very funny sight gags."Â The New York Times (2014)"Mega-hit ALMOST, MAINE lands somewhere between Norman Rockwell and 'Our Town.' Unabashedly unhip. There is no pretense of an edge here -- the show offers a sweetness and decency that's become rare at the theater. At this point, it's a welcome breath of fresh air."Â The New York Post (2014)"AMOST, MAINE's charm is real. [It] packs wit, earns its laughs and, like love, surprises you."Â The New York Daily News (2014)

I ordered this play sight unseen on the recommendation of a playwright friend of mine as I was struggling to write a play with multiple scene structure. This play was beautifully written and though I bought it to study the structure, I forgot about that as the characters drew me into the story as a good play should. I read it and then read it again. I often go to my shelf to re-read it for inspiration in the subtle theatricality and simplicity of it. I hope to see this play performed someday soon.I did get my play written and I owe the inspiration of weaving multiple stories together to this play.I would highly recommend reading and seeing this play. The writer has made his characters real, relatable, and the every day life they live compelling.
I loved this play - had never heard of John Cariani before. Apparently this is his one drama, and it left me wanting him to write more. I also valued the Director's Notes at the back of the manuscript. They really helped me understand how the play should be presented.Subsequent to reading it, I saw it performed at Florida State University, which was tremendous. The young actors, including sophomore Cecil Jennings, were outstanding.
This is one of my favorite plays but the cover is all messed up and there is a lot of highlighting and writing in the script.
I teach an introduction to drama course, and I was looking for a play that was compelling, well-written, and school appropriate. Almost, Maine ticked all of those boxes. The kids had a ball reading it, and it found a nice place on my shelf of go-to plays for monologues and scene work. Highly recommended.
This is a brilliant piece of writing sold to me from a seller I've userd so many times before and am always pleased with. the play is about love and the ways in which people don;t completely commit. Even the title is the result of this: a town in northernmost Maine (Near Millinocket, though smaller and ficticious) that came very close to incorporating but something in the paerwork or the effort never got done so the town has never completely incorporated, henc e it's name "Almost." One of the characters is named "East" which is a shortening ofg his name, "Eastbrook" and his place of birth is typed onto his birth certificate as "Matthew."Still with me?These metaphors are there to highlight there greatest metaphgor of all, which is that single character who- through the course of the evening, DOES commit; DOES go over and beyond in order to declare love; in order to be "closer" and this very moment is on a par with the most classic theatre moment anyolne could ever find. Opheila's suicide. Tony's shot body falling into Maria's arms, "Attnetion Must be paid!", "Stella!" Five sisters dancing around a table during the festival of Lughnasa, "The shock of what "send In The Clowns" means; The transistion of horror to hyst4erical laughter in less than 30 minutes at the end of Act I in ":Sweeney todd.", The fight between Martha and George at the end of Act II in "Virgtinia Woolfe." Yes, the agogee of "Almost, Maine" by John Cariani is right up there with the best of them and that wsingle apogee clarifys the rest of the play. It's worth buying and reading this script. I did it opposite: I saw the play in Portalnd, Maine in 2004 and then this play came to me in 2013.And even that, is irony.
The play was interesting. I may have really like it if I wasn’t so angry when I read it. It did not arrive as promised therefore I had it for overnight prior to auditions. Didn’t bother to audition as I had no time to prepare. Disappointed.
Funny, sad, whimsical and thoroughly charming, this play gives us twelve conversations about love, all of which are taking place simultaneously in and around the community of Almost, Maine. Simple production values and flexible casting opportunities make this play ideal for high school, college, and community theater groups everywhere. If you're on a play-reading committee, give this one a try.
This is a play I can see using in our area community theatre. It's quirky, but requires little staging and few people. Again, happy to have this in my collection of possible plays to use for our community theatre.
