Miranda Liasson’s novel, This Thing Called Love is a great story. Filled with angst and romance, this novel follows the lives of Olivia Marks, a driven New York City editor and Brad Rushford, a self-made restaurateur. High school sweethearts, they are thrust back together ten years later when Olivia is granted guardianship to her niece Annabelle. And this is when the twists begin.Olivia has no idea how to raise a baby. From the very first line of the story, Olivia’s anxiety is palpable. She is a successful business woman, but knowing how to make a one-month old happy is not something she can simply check off on one of her to do lists. She is back in her hometown, away from her job and friends in New York. And then there is Brad, who brings back memories of stolen kisses and first love. And who questions if she is capable to raise Annabelle, which reinforces her own insecurities. And the twists keep coming in this wonderful small harbor town romance. Can Olivia embrace being a mother and keep her high-pressured job? Can she convince Brad that she is able to care for her niece? And can she believe him when he says he wants to try again? No spoilers here. You have to read this wonderful debut for yourself. And since this hints to being a series, my only question is when can I read the next book!

I received this book as part of the Amazon's "Kindle First" program.I chose to read this because I thought the premise sounded promising: successful, career-oriented young woman, Olivia, finds herself in a dilemma when her sister and brother-in-law pass away in a car accident and leave her as the caretaker of her niece, a 4-week old baby, Annabelle. Putting her life on hold in the big city, she takes two weeks to go back to her small hometown, Mirror Lakes, to put things in order before she takes the baby with her to the city. But in her hometown more than her niece is awaiting her--handsome Brad, her ex-boyfriend from high school and also uncle of Annabelle, does not agree with her taking the baby, and will do anything he can to keep Olivia in Mirror Lakes. Whether he is doing it because he still feel things for Olivia or because he only wants Annabelle to be raised with her family is not clear, not even to Brad. Many books and movies have played successfully this plot before, e.g., "Raising Helen," "Life as We Know It," so I was very excited to read "This Thing Called Love," probably expecting something of the same caliber. Unfortunately, I found it to be an utter disappointment. The family relationship complications and the hardship of finding yourself suddenly the mother of a newborn barely played a role in the novel, and were just used as an excuse to fuel the relationship between Brad and Olivia. Even though both characters kept mentioning now and then how much they cared about the baby, how the baby was everything, it just didn't feel that way. It just felt like cheap talk. I love romance novels, so I don't mind a focus on the romance or a bit of cheesiness, but I still like a good plot and well-developed characters, well-written scenes. Here, chapter after chapter, it moved from "Omg I love Brad, but he doesn't love me" to "Omg I love Olivia, but I am afraid she will leave me," and I don't think I heard any different thought from those two for however hundred pages this book lasted.Their attitude felt more like that of a pair of teenagers rather than two 30-year old people. Although some scenes did make me laugh, e.g., ***SPOILER: when Olivia ends up hanging from the window because she tried to spy on Brad***, most of the jokes sounded a bit pathetic.I think the idea was great and appealing, but the way it was written it just felt flat: flat plot, flat characters, poor romance. I am starting to think that beside Nora Roberts, Diana Gabaldon, or Deborah Harkness (and the last two aren't even romance writers, rather more like historical fantasy with a romantic couple in the center) I must desist from reading romantic novels, especially ones that are offered to me for free.

Would have given this book one star but that means 'I hate it'. I don't use that word if I can help it so...'I don't like it' will suffice. And, afterall,I did read it to the end, albeit, begrudgingly, because I don't like wasting money. I didn't mind that the book was predictable. What I did mind was the constant sexual innuendos and encounters. Really, I was young once and even at my age, I can appreciate a good looking man; one with a fine body; nice hair; etc.; but how many times must you read 'he entered the room and her hormones raged'; or 'he took off his shirt and she felt herself get hot (you know where). Really?? As well, I never buy a 'series' book and this is why. I must have overlooked that fact when I got the book but I will not be reading the rest of the series.

4-5 Stars. I downloaded this from the Kindle First books for April and very glad that I did. It was a romance at heart but read a little like chick literature so the story had a few other themes going. Olivia is a brand new mom after being named guardian to her niece whose parents died in a car accident. Up to this point, she's been career minded so as the reader we follow her thoughts as well as actions with how this major change impacts her life. Some of these parts are funny while others are more serious but it all kept my interest and the writing was consistent. Enter Brad who is Olivia's old flame from when she lived in town. Brad happens to be the niece's uncle and has his own ideas on what's best for her. Then there's the attraction between these two characters that had you rooting for them but Brad 's been a bachelor for awhile. I don't want to spoil anything but this wasn't anything instant and with their history, the pages turned pretty quickly. I will say there wasn't alot of steam in this book but it's not what the story was about and I found myself wanting to read more about their actual relationship(which had meddling from family, friends and "interested" others). I see this is a debut book for this author and think it's a great one.
